Antigua & Western Highlands Travel Guide
The Antigua and Western Highlands are located in the central highlands of Guatemala. It is known for its active preservation of historic Spanish Baroque buildings and ruins in town. The skyline of Antigua boasts a number of volcanoes nearby. Antigua is rapidly becoming a tourist destination and is keeping pace with visitors who require luxury hotels, accessible transportation and wireless internet access. It is now possible to explore Guatemala and the Western highland region on a public transit system based in Antigua and Guatemala City.
When to Go
Winter and spring months are the high season for Antigua and the Western Highlands. In the spring months, the weather is fair and is also the time of religious celebrations. Reservations during the high season will need to be made months in advance to take advantage of the temperate weather and see the Semana Santa processions in March or April. Low season is May to October as these months signal the rainy season. However, traveling to Antigua and the Western Highlands during the rainy season is not that difficult as the rains usually occur in the afternoon hours and only last for a couple of hours.
Where to Stay
The Quinta de las Flores Hotel has beautiful grounds that are designed to display a variety colorful plants and provide expansive views of the volcanoes. Guest room amenities include private baths, fireplaces, mini bar and cable TV. The Aurora Hotel has a convenient location only two blocks from the busy central plaza. The building that houses the hotel was converted from an old convent and has a lush central garden and covered walkways. Guest rooms include a free breakfast, rich dark wood furnishings and colorful patios. The Casa Florencia Hotel is a boutique style hotel. The owners are gracious hosts and offer their knowledge of the area and will arrange interesting tours for guests if requested. Guest rooms have an affordable price and include complimentary morning coffee, cable TV and high speed internet access.
What to do
Don't miss a chance to visit a live volcano with a good guide. Outdoor excursions will take you on a hike to the base of the Pacaya volcano then set up camp to view the sunset. After dark it is time to hike to the lava field for an unforgettable night time view. To take in all the cultural and social aspects of Antigua visit the Parque Central or town square. Here you can relax, take in the historic architecture and people watch. Then head over to the Street Market which is located 5 blocks west of the town square. This market is a bargain hunters dream with everything from T-shirts to handmade textiles and crafts.
