Why Is Jamaica a Popular Vacation Spot?
Tucked away in the heart of the
Caribbean Sea, Jamaica is a jewel, and tourists from all over the world come each year to explore this treasure of an island. The country's tourism has evolved so that families can enjoy a getaway in a tropical paradise, or couples can enjoy a
romantic retreat in one of the world's most beautiful settings.
Climate
Jamaica's climate oftentimes is a draw to travelers. Most of the island has tropical weather conditions, although some areas in higher elevations inland do have a moderate climate. Because of its proximity to the equator, there is little variation in the country's temperatures. As such, it is a popular destination spot for Americans looking to escape blustery conditions throughout the winter months. The country's coldest month is February, where temperatures dip into the 80-degree Fahrenheit range (27 degrees Celsius). Temperatures generally go as high as 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) during the summer months. Year-round, the majority of Jamaica's days are sunny with blue skies. According to statistical weather data, the rainiest months are September and October, with rainfall occurring about 47 percent of the time. The driest month is March, with rain falling 29 percent of the month.
Amenities That Cater to Tourists
Because it is such a popular destination, there are a plethora of amenities throughout Jamaica catering to tourists. Hotels, resorts, villas and bed-and-breakfast operations dot beachfront property throughout the island. The term "all-inclusive" is a buzzword used by many of these operations in an effort to enhance travelers' experiences on the island. The Sandals chain, for example, operates the Grande Ocho Rios beach and villa golf resort that features a tropical garden setting, private pools and an abundance of in-house dining options. In a nod to its popularity among tourists, five of Jamaica's eight airports are available for civilian use throughout the 145-mile island.
Popular Destinations
Dunn's River Falls
Some of the most popular sites to visit on Jamaica's east coast are Port Antonio and Ocho Rios, while Montego Bay and Negril are hot spots on the country's west coast. Specific destinations that draw travelers to the island include the scenic Blue Lagoon on Port Antonio. As its name suggests, the lagoon is a rich blue color. Snorkeling and boat rides are offered there. Kingston Harbour, one of the largest harbours in the world, is another notable attraction on the island with a large fishing village nearby. Dunn's River Falls, a famous waterfall on the island, is another draw because of the ease in walking through it.
