Things to Do in St. George Bermuda
St. George is a small, charming city on the oldest overseas British territory, the island of Bermuda. Although widely believed to be in the
Caribbean, Bermuda is actually approximately 1,000 miles north of the Caribbean Sea, with it's closest land mass being Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. St. George is a bustling hub of tourist activity during peak season, offering rich historical elements, long days of subtropical weather and plentiful cerulean sea activity.
Historical Monuments
The Unfinished Church reveals distinctive Gothic architectural elements.
The uninhabited island of Bermuda was discovered in the early-1500's by Spanish navigator Juan de Bermudez when his ship was wrecked on the coral reefs. Throughout the 16th century, St. George served as a ship replenishment location. Because Bermuda's rich 500-year history is soaked with political conflicts and religious struggles, there are several historical elements and monuments that tourists find interesting. A five-minute walk from downtown St. George reveals the crumbling beauty of The Unfinished Church. This Gothic structure was constructed in late-1800s and eventually abandoned because of financial problems, natural disasters and religious quarrels. Additionally, history aficionados will enjoy the Old State House (a display of the oldest stone building on the island), Tucker House Museum, Fort St. Catherine, King's Square, St. Peter's Church and the Bermuda National Trust Museum. Many tours are offered at each unique area. Visitors will learn about local myths and legends, encounter famous grave sites and hear about Bermuda's role in the American Revolution.
Water Activities
Kayaking is a popular Bermuda water activity.
Major attractions in Bermuda are the crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, soft sandy beaches and plentiful water activities. Within just a short walk from downtown St. George are numerous beaches and secluded coves. Consider Tobacco Bay, known for its tranquil waters, distinctive rock formations and popular beaches, or Achilles Bay for excellent snorkeling. Visitors will enjoy countless hours lounging in the sunshine, snorkeling and swimming. In addition to having exotic, subtropical beaches, St. George's favorite water activities include gliding on glass-bottom kayaks, cave and coral reef exploration, fishing, parasailing, scuba diving and boating.
