This article gives an overview on the island of Jamaica, the most popular tourist destination in the
Caribbean.
Geography
Jamaica lies in the Caribbean sea, south of Cuba. It is roughly halfway between Miami and Barranquilla Columbia.
History
On May 4,1494, Christopher Columbus arrived at the island of Jamaica. On August 6, 1962, Jamaica received full independence from the United Kingdom.
Size
Jamaica is 10,991 sq km., and is slightly smaller then the state of Connecticut.
Capital
The capital city is Kingston, which is located on the southeastern part of the island.
Population
According to the website Cia.gov, the population of Jamaica is approximately 2,825,928.
Language
Most of the population speaks English and English patois, a dialect.
Fun Fact
Jamaica is the birthplace of many popular musical genres, including ska, reggae, dancehall and dub. Until his death in May 1981, reggae superstar Bob Marley was one of the most popular musicians in the world.
