Tourism in Victoria, B.C., Canada

Victoria is British Columbia's provincial capital and second-largest city. Located on scenic Vancouver Island, about two hours from Vancouver by ferry, it rated16th out of 100 in trip advisor's 2008 Traveler's Choice Awards. More than 3 million people visit Victoria each year, making it one of the region's most popular destinations. While Victoria's Old World charm and British ambiance are among the city's top attractions, its parks, scenic overlooks and distinctive waterfronts make it one of the most attractive cities in Canada.
History

Victoria is home to one of British Columbia's largest collections of historic buildings. Stately mansions, government buildings and Victoria's carefully preserved downtown quarter offer plenty of opportunity for self-guided tours. Museums such as the Royal British Columbia Museum and the 19th-century Craigdarroch Castle add an introspective view of Victoria's early history as B.C.'s largest city.

Parks

Victoria is renowned for its parks, particularly for Butchart Gardens, which attracts millions of visitors each year. The island's many regional parks are a special attraction as well, providing thousands of acres of green space and recreational facilities to enjoy both in Victoria and throughout the island.

Chinatown

Victoria's Chinatown is the second-oldest Chinese community in North America and dates back to the days of British Columbia's Gold Rush. Attractions include its elegant entrance, the Gate of Harmonious Interest and its many historic buildings. It is also home to the narrowest street in Canada and a number of excellent restaurants and curio shops.

Galloping Goose Trail

Victoria residents love to walk, and there is no better example of this than the city's unusual Galloping Goose Trail. The rambling 34 mile/55 km trail connects cities, rural areas, historic sites, parks and forests. Day-use parks, interpretive sites and camping areas with views of Vancouver Island's attractive waterfront are all part of the scenery. The trail can be accessed from multiple locations throughout the Greater Victoria area.

Whale Watching

No trip to Vancouver Island is complete without a whale-watching excursion. Tour vessels dock at the Inner Harbour and depart each day. Tours of the Inner Harbour and surrounding waters can also be arranged in Victoria, both for half-day and whole-day excursions.
