Ontario Smallmouth Bass Fishing Tips
The smallmouth bass has become a popular sport fish because of its "fight" and how it jumps from the water when being caught. May to late-September is the peak fishing season for smallmouth bass in Ontario, but your timing will dictate your supplies and where you should cast your line.
Early Season
In the beginning of the season when fish are laying their eggs, you can find them toward the shoreline tending to their spawning beds. Disrupting the fish and agitating them as they are near the water's edge is the most effective way to catch them. Casting a top-water plug that makes noise and splashes, then slowly jerking it back should get their attention. Dying flutters, fat raps and hula poppers are recommended. Be patient, the fish may respond as soon as they see the lure or bite as you're pulling back. Fishing near dusk may net the best results.
Late Season
During the mid- to late-summer, experts recommend using the black and yellow Mepps Black Fury #3 tackle and visiting the Seine Chain in Northwestern Ontario for catching plentiful smallmouth. The fish have moved deep under water so rocky areas, small islands that have been submerged, and weedy edges are a great place to cast. You should be able to fish with much success at any time of the day. Adjust your fishing line depending on where you cast using, 12- to 20-lb. line around deeper, weedier areas, and lighter line with flashy tackle on sunny days and when the water is clear.
Where to Go
The Seine Chain is the most popular of many lakes and rivers where smallmouth bass can be fished in the area. Crooked Pine Lake, Eye Lake, Lerome Lake, Marmion Lake, Plateau Lake and Twinling Lake are some other popular destinations.
Other Equipment & Tips
Plastic Mister Twister grubs and live bait including worms, minnows, night crawlers and leeches will all be attractive to the smallmouth bass. Before handling bait, wash your hands and use sugar to remove residues of boat gasoline or salt to remove bug spray because the fish can pick up the scent and don't like it. A depth finder will help you locate the best areas to cast. The daily limit on smallmouth bass is six. Ontario encourages catch and release.
