Official Canadian Border Regulations
There are certain rules and regulations for entering Canada. Whether you are crossing the border by land, air or sea, these rules need to be followed. Official regulations apply to anyone entering Canada, including Americans and those from other countries. This is even the case for Canadians reentering their country from a trip abroad.
Identification

Travelers planning to cross the Canadian border need to have proper identification. Passports are preferred, although border officials will also take a NEXUS traveler's card, an enhanced American driver's license or a military identification card. Children under 18 traveling into Canada may use a birth certificate.

Customs and Prohibited Items

Some items may not be taken into Canada during your trip across the border. Prohibited products include agricultural items, weapons, and some eggs, meat and dairy products. During a trip to Canada, visitors will be asked to declare their items. If you are bringing any food, drink or plants, these must be declared. In some cases, they may be taken away. This precaution helps to ensure the delicate balance of Canada's ecosystem.

Criminal Records

People with criminal records may be barred from entering Canada. This includes smaller, misdemeanor crimes as well as DWI charges. This is especially the case for those that plan to spend an extended amount of time in Canada or plan to become a permanent resident. Those with criminal records can fill out an application for rehabilitation, which may allow them entrance into Canada.
