The Falls

Niagara Falls sits on the international boundary of Canada and the United States. Goat Island separates the falls into two parts: the American Falls and Horseshoe Falls. The latter lies mainly in Canada. Niagara Falls, Canada, overlooks Horseshoe Falls.

Historical Fact

In 1814, Americans and British citizens fought in Niagara Falls, Canada, at the Battle at Lundy Lane. It is considered one of the bloodiest battles of the War of 1812. A museum sits at the battle site today.

The falls serve as a source of hydroelectric power. Two hydroelectric plants, Sir Adam Beck 1 and Sir Adam Beck 2, provide electricity to southern Ontario and to western New York state.
