When you enter
Canada as a tourist, the immigration officer is responsible for determining whether you can enter the country. While visa lengths vary for different types of travelers, most tourists can stay for up to six months before needing to request a change in status.
Function
A tourist entry is granted if the immigration official is satisfied that you are entering Canada temporarily and intend to leave the country.
Time Frame
If you intend to stay longer than six months, you must request a temporary resident visa, which can allow multiple entries and allows students and families to stay for longer periods of time, depending on the visa.
Changes
If, during your trip as a tourist, you decide you'd like to stay in Canada, you must request a change in status and get a visa at least 30 days before your six-month initial entry time expires.
Misconceptions
You cannot state that you are on a trip for pleasure and enter visa-free. The immigration official has the right to validate that you are in good health, have access to enough money to cover the cost of your stay and have a return ticket.
Passport
Most countries require that your passport be valid for six months beyond the date that your visa expires. However, in Canada, it's easier; your passport needs to be valid for only one day longer than your six- month stay or visa, whichever you use to enter.
