Facts on Lake Louise in Canada
Named after the fourth child born to Queen Victoria, Lake Louise in Alberta,
Canada lies within the boundaries of Banff National Park. Lake Louise is what is known as a glacial lake, formed by melting ice that filled a hollow carved out by receding glaciers.
Hiking
Lake Louise is called the "Hiking capital of Canada" due to the over 200 kilometers of trails available to those wishing to walk around the area. One of the mountains that can be hiked to is the 9,003-foot tall Fairview Mountain.
Lake Louise Mountain Resort
The Lake Louise Mountain resort offers 139 ski runs to beginner, advanced and expert skiers. It also has a gondola that people can ride in to see the exceptional scenery of the area.
Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is a luxury establishment on Lake Louise's eastern shore. It has been open year-round since 1982 and offers its guests a full range of activities related to the surrounding countryside.
Activities
Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, canoeing, kayaking and mountain biking are all activities that people flocking to Lake Louise may enjoy. Other fun things to do include ice skating and ice fishing in the winter along with horseback riding in the warmer months.
Dimensions
Lake Louise is not a large body of water, having a surface area of eight tenths of a square mile. It sits at an elevation of 5,700 feet and the small settlement there is Canada's highest in terms of elevation.
