French-Influenced Food in Quebec
Quebec is one of the few French-speaking provinces in
Canada. So it is no surprise that the culture and cuisine are French-influenced. The following are three of the finest examples of French-influenced food in Quebec.
Crepes
Crepes are made from batter, similar to pancakes, but are very thin so that they may be filled with any number of different fillings. They can be used at breakfast and filled with spinach and cheese, sausage, eggs, and other breakfast foods. The most popular use of crepes is as a dessert, where they are filled with thick creams, chocolate and deliciously sweetened fruits such as strawberries and blueberries.
Croissants
Croissants are a classic staple food in France, so it is no surprise that they became just as popular in Quebec. Croissants can be considered bread or pastry depending on what is put on them. They can be eaten at any time of the day. Typically, they are crusty on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Croissants are often enjoyed with butter or even chocolate sauce.
Bouillabaisse
Bouillabaisse is an expensive French stew. It contains at least three different kinds of fish, vegetables and herbs. One of the herbs used is saffron, which gives the bouillabaisse the orange color that had made it almost as famous as the taste of the bouillabaisse itself. Bouillabaisse was always known as a "rich man's food," but it has become a staple in French culture and is one of the most delicious French-influenced foods in Quebec.
