Facts About the City of Quebec

Quebec City is the capital of the Canadian province of Quebec. The city sits on the north bank of the Saint Lawrence River, not far from where it meets the St. Charles River. Quebec City is divided into eight boroughs: La Cite, Les Rivieres, Sainte-Foy-Sillery, Charlesbourg, Beauport, Limoilou, La Haute-Saint-Charles and Laurentien. Each borough is also divided into districts.
History

The French explorer Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec City in 1608.

Size

With a population of more than 491,000, Quebec City is the second-largest city in the province of Quebec, behind Montreal.

Skyline

There are not many tall buildings in Quebec City. The skyline is dominated by the Chateau Frontenac, a hotel with castle-like architecture and turrets.

Fun Fact

Quebec City is famous for its annual Winter Carnival. Organizers call it the largest of its kind in the world. The two-week-long carnival features dozens of activities, including ice skating, dogsled racing, outdoor dance parties and parades.
