Ask 10 different Canadian's what the best food in
Canada is, and you will likely get 10 different responses based on your location. The best food in Canada can vary from French cuisine to Canadian Chinese, with dishes that originated in Scandinavia, Poland, Germany and the First Nations in between.
Poutine
Poutine is a common dish found through out most of Canada and it is a must-try food when visiting. Poutine consists of fried potato wedges drenched with cheese curd and chicken gravy. Although it can be found in restaurants all over Canada, it is most commonly found in Quebec as a street food.
Fish and Brewis or Fisherman's Brewis
A Newfoundland favorite is a dish called the Fisherman's Brewis, a meal that consists of codfish and hard bread or hard tack. Traditionally it is served in two ways. The first is with scruchions or salted fat pork that has been cut into small pieces and fried; the rendered fat and the fried pieces are then drizzled over the codfish and hard bread. The other way Fisherman's Brewis is served is with drawn or melted butter and onions that has been thickened with flour and is poured over the fish and hard bread while hot.
Paté Chinois
Literally translated, Paté Chinois means "China pie" and although it is not Chinese in origin, it is still one of the best foods in Canada. Paté chinois is a layered meat pie that is similar to shepherd's pie. The layers include browned ground beef, diced onions, canned corn and mashed potatoes. The pie is then sprinkled with paprika and baked. It is often served with beets or picked eggs.
Beaver Tails, Elephant Ears or Whale Tails
A fried dough pastry is one of the best dishes to try in Canada and goes by the name beaver tails, elephant ears or whale tails depending on the region. A yeast dough is taken and deep fried, then topped with a condiment such as sugar, cinnamon and/or nutella. Beaver tails received welcome press in February 2009 when President Obama made a special trip in Ottawa to buy one before heading home. In honor of the president's visit, a special "Obama Tail" was created and served.
Anything Maple
Look at a Canadian flag and you will see a maple leaf. Canadians know maple better than almost anyone on the planet. The best Canadian foods made with maple include maple pie, maple candies, maple syrups and maple leaf cream cookies.
