If you happen to be visiting New Zealand for the first time, not only are you going to be fascinated by its scenic beauty, but you are also going to be bewildered by the abrupt weather changes, brought about by its geographical positioning and features like the sea and the mountains. You can consider this country to be sunshine country, with sporadic bursts of moderate to high rainfall and different ranges of temperature. Even though the climate is considered to be temperate, you can have subtropical summers in the north, and terribly cold winters in the alpine areas present in the southern portion of New Zealand.
"I am dreaming of a white Christmas," is definitely not going to be the case in New Zealand, and that is why tourists come here to enjoy the sunshine in December. In the same manner, January is going to be really warm, while July is freezing cold. So, if you find it somewhat sweltering hot in your part of the hemisphere, you can always escape to New Zealand in June and July and enjoy the snow.
The weather in New Zealand is notoriously fickle, and that is why one cannot go by the idea of "red at dawn, stormy morn." You might find the morning sunny and suddenly find yourself exposed to a full-grown tropical cyclone by afternoon. You might find it really chilly in the evening, as a cold front marches in. Any tourist coming to New Zealand may be a bit bewildered at the sudden change in weather and that is the reason why he is always cautioned to be on the lookout for sudden weather changes, especially when he is out hiking in the mountains!
A tourist coming to New Zealand for the first time is sometimes extremely surprised at the power of the sunshine. The ultraviolet rays are really more potent here, and that is why the sunshine can be taken only in small doses. So one has to be very careful about keeping the skin as well as the head covered the moment he goes out in the sun.
Any tourist who enjoys the rain is going to love this rain-washed country. But you have to be very careful about flash floods. You can have rain in the summer as well as in the winter, so be ready with your Macintosh and galoshes to do your exploring of the beauties of New Zealand, just singing in the rain.
September is one of the most beautiful seasons in New Zealand, and that is the reason why in the number of tourists come to enjoy the scenic beauty of an island waking up from a harsh winter. This is a time when you can go exploring the countryside or even go rafting, especially when the level of the river waters have risen to exciting heights, by the melting snow of the spring.
