Moving to Australia - Things to Do
There are as many reasons to move to Australia as there are people who do. The sixth largest country in the world, Australia has the lowest population density per square kilometer in the world, so there is plenty of elbow room. Perhaps the primary reason people move to Australia is the quality of life. Once you have decided to make the move, there are lots of things you'll need to do.
Before you move

Double-check that all the financial, tax and legal issues that may affect you or any family members moving with you have been handled. Make sure your current banking establishment can handle transactions in Australia, or consider opening a bank account in country. Ensure all your travel arrangements are in place and confirmed. Provide contact information to relatives, business relations and friends. Make sure you have all important papers and documentation that may be required. This should include originals of of birth certificates, marriage certificate, medical and work records, school report cards and transcripts. You will, of course, need your passport. Drivers are required to be able to show claim-free proof of insurance if they wish to operate a vehicle in Australia. Check with Australian customs regarding any household items that you may wish to bring with you as a wide variety of timber and cane products, fabrics and foodstuffs are restricted. For people who are immigrating and intend to become permanent residents Australia will usually allow personal and household goods to be brought into the country free of Customs duty provided you can show ownership and use for the previous 12 months.

When you arrive

Plan on a full agenda when you arrive in Australia. You will have your passport, visa and Incoming Passenger Card checked by the Immigration official, and your bags may be checked by the Customs officer. You should convert your money to Australian currency at this point. Once all of your official check-ins have been accomplished you are free to rent a car (driver's license is required) or hire a cab to take you to your accommodations.

After you arrive

The Australian government's Department of Immigration and Citizenship recommends all newcomers to the country accomplish seven tasks as soon as possible after arrival.
1. Apply for a Tax File Number. You cannot receive income in Australia without one.
2. Register with Medicare. This is a government program that helps to defray costs of basic medical care.
3. Open an Australian bank account. Most employers and government benefits are paid by direct deposit.
4. Register with Centrelink, the government agency which provides an array of services to the community.
5. Register for English classes if English is not your primary language. English is the official language of Australia.
6. Enroll your children in school. Australian law requires compulsory attendance for children until they reach 15 years of age.
7. Apply for a driver's license.
