Step 1

Enter the international prefix or International Direct Dialing Number for calls outside of Australia. This is 0011.

Step 2

Find the international code for the country you're dialing. The code for calling the United States is 1; the code for England is 44.

Step 3

For other countries, get the international code from the phone book, websites such as Timeanddate.com, or from the person or business you're calling.

Step 4

Dial a local or city code if there is one. Many countries are small enough to rely on the international code. However, countries such as the United States use area codes for each region.

Step 5

Follow the international prefix, international code and local/city code with the phone number. If you're calling 555-1212 in New York City, for example, dial (0011) 1-212-555-1212.
