How to Fix a Broken iPod
An iPod can break in two different ways. First, it can develop a software problem where songs begin to lock up or skip during play. Any software problem you may develop can easily be fixed in just a few minutes by the user. The next issue is a hardware problem, where your iPod's screen becomes cracked or the battery stops holding a charge. These problems are more difficult to fix and will have to be sent to Apple. If you are traveling, you will need a laptop computer to fix the software problem, or to locate the nearest Apple Genius Bar for more serious fixes.

Step 1
Reset your iPod. If you are having a software issue, try to reset your iPod. This has the same effect as restarting a computer; it allows your iPod to completely shut down and then restart, clearing its internal memory. To reset your iPod, hold the "Play/Pause" and "Enter" buttons on the front of your iPod until the device completely shuts off. Hold them down again until the device turns back on.
Step 2
Restore your iPod. Restoring an iPod has the same effect as uninstalling and reinstalling a computer program. It completely removes the iPod's operating system and freshly reinstalls it. To do this, connect your iPod to your computer using the USB link cable. Open iTunes and select the "Restore" option in your iPod's main settings window.
Step 3
Find your nearest Apple Genius Bar, or send your iPod to Apple for service. To send your iPod to Apple for service, fill out Apple's Online Service Assistant form at https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do. The cost to repair your iPod will vary depending on the model, but in most cases, it will be cheaper than simply buying a new iPod.
