How to Apply for a Visa After Registration in Australia

If you are visiting Australia with the intention of staying longer than three months, it's best to apply for a tourist visa prior to your trip. However, if you are in Australia and decide to extend your travel document, it is possible to do so with a little bit of paperwork and a fee.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You'll Need:
  • Passport or Travel Document Documents to Support Your Application Application Form or Electronic Application Applicable Fees
  • Passport or Travel Document
  • Documents to Support Your Application
  • Application Form or Electronic Application
  • Applicable Fees
Step 1

Collect the necessary documents to submit with your application: your passport or travel document, a local mailing address where you will be staying in Australia, evidence of funds or access to money necessary to support your stay, a travel itinerary and return plane tickets, if applicable, and any other documents relevant to or supporting your request.

Step 2

Determine the length of time you'd like to extend your visa. Applications for Australian visas for stays of less than six months may be submitted online. Applications to extend your Australian visa for a period greater than three months must be made at a department office--in person, by mail or via registered migration agent.

Step 3

Submit your application, documents and fees. After completing Form 601, the "Application for further stay as a visitor," and as long as you are in good health and have not violated the terms of your visitor status, you should receive a visitor visa that will allow you to stay in Australia an additional three to 12 months. You can check the status of your online application anytime after it is logged using the Transaction Reference Number (TRN) provided when you submit your application.
