Travel in Seoul, South Korea

Whether you are planning on having a look around Seoul during your layover or you are planning a vacation there, you should make yourself familiar with the city's transportation system. There are lots of options available that can fit with any budget.
Buses

Seoul has an extensive bus system that can be used to get anywhere in the city. The bus routes are all numbered, and you can pay with cash.

Regular Taxis

Taxis are abundant in Seoul. A meter tells you exactly how much you will have to pay, so you do not have to barter. Fares go up 20 percent between midnight and 4 a.m.

Deluxe Taxis

Deluxe taxis can be easily spotted because they are black and say "Deluxe Taxi" on them. They cost more but they are roomier, have a car phone available, and offer receipts. Rates of deluxe taxis do not change as regular taxis do.

Subways

Because there are eight different subways lines, they are one of the easiest ways to get around Seoul. Most of the signage in the stations is written in Korean and English, and you can make easy bus connections outside of the stations.

Car Rental

You can rent a car in South Korea, but you must have an international driver's license. Car drivers are also available for hire, but you must be willing to pay for their meals and hotel as well.
