Requirements for an Indian Passport

All Indian citizens need an Indian passport to travel internationally. They can obtain passports either at the local immigration authority where they live in India or in an Indian consulate abroad. The Ministry of External Affairs has a number of passport offices scattered across the country---you can easily find the closest office to you on the ministry's website (see Resources).
Required Documents for a New Passport

All applicants for an Indian passport should have the required documents and apply at the passport office closest to them. These documents include proof of address, proof of date and place of birth, citizenship document if naturalized and documents showing reimbursements to the government if the candidate was ever repatriated to India at government cost. You should have two copies of each document when you apply (see Resources). Note that each passport office may have its unique processing times and procedures, so in addition to visiting the general website, it is advisable to study the web page of your local passport office. There is a basic passport fee as well as a graduated processing fee depending on how soon you will like to receive your passport.

Replacing an Expired or Lost Passport

If you have an expired passport, and you need a reissue, you will have to provide your old passport, signed copies of the first four and last four pages along with any updated proof of address if applicable. If you need to replace a lost or damaged passport, you are to provide all the documents required for a new passport, copies of the first and last four pages of your old passport, if you have them, as well as any documentation of the loss such as a police report, if applicable.

Applicants Abroad

Applicants abroad need to go to the nearest Indian embassy or consulate to apply for a passport. Each consular office may have additional requirements in addition to the general ones discussed above. It is best to contact your local consulate for specifics (see Resources).
