The History of Micronesia

Micronesia is made up of 607 islands that are grouped into four states. Micronesia is located in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, about 2,500 miles southwest of Hawaii. English is the official language of Micronesia.
First Settlers

People from southeast Asia and Polynesia traveled to the islands over 2,000 years ago.

Later Expeditions

In 1525, Portuguese explorers discovered Yap and Ulithi islands while looking for Indonesia in search of spice. Spain set up a colonial government but later sold most of its interests in the area to Germany. Japan took over islands in the area in 1914. Main industries were tropical agriculture, mining and fishing.

Trust Territory

In 1947, the United Nations formed the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The United States was named trustee.

Forming Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia was formed on July 12,1978. The districts of Pohnpei, Yap, Chuuk and Kusaie formed the new federation.

United Nations Membership

On September 17,1991, the Federated States of Micronesia joined the United Nations.
