The closest large Chinese city to the Great Wall is Beijing, the nation's capital, and while taking a side trip to one of the seven wonders of the world is easily accomplished, you'll likely share your view with lots of other tourists
Badaling
The closest portion of the Great Wall to Beijing is at Badaling, some 40 miles northwest of the city.
Tourist mecca
Given its proximity, Badaling is busy and rather tourist-y, with multiple shops and stalls selling t-shirts and souvenirs.
Rest stop
In 2005, Starbucks opened its 10,000th coffee shop at Badaling, offering mocha lattes just yards from the wall built to hold back Mongol hordes.
Better Views
A second Great Wall spot close to Beijing is Mutianyu, 50 miles north of the city, which offers better views and more impressive towers.
Fewer tourists
Simatai, about 80 miles north of Beijing, is not as touristy, and attracts hikers who trek the six mile route to the small town of Gubeikou.
