How to Change iPod Software
The software used to run an iPod is called its "operating system." Much like the operating system on a computer, an iPod's OS is the program that allows it to store and play all of your favorite music and videos (depending on your model). Periodically Apple will release upgrades to the iPod's operating system software which can be optionally downloaded and installed in just a matter of minutes, depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Things You'll Need:
  • iTunes
  • iTunes
Step 1

Open iTunes. If you haven't already installed iTunes on your computer you must do so to proceed. Download the installation file from www.apple.com/itunes and install it in the same manner you would for any other computer program.

Step 2

Connect your iPod to your computer using its USB link cable.

Step 3

Click on your iPod's name under the "Devices" menu on the left side of the iTunes screen. This will bring up your iPod's main settings menu.

Step 4

Click the button that reads "Check for Updates." This will check Apple's server for a newer version of your iPod's software. If a newer version than the one currently on your iPod is available you will be presented with the option of downloading and installing it.

Step 5

Click the "Restore" button. If you've updated your iPod software but regret the decision you can click the "Restore" button to return your iPod to its original factory settings - operating system and all. It is important to note that this method will erase all content contained on your iPod. However, it can easily be synced again in just a couple of minutes.
