Located in northern India, Chandigarh is the capital of two states, Punjab and Haryana. It is India's first planned city and has a population of just less than 1 million.
Planned City
Chandigarh is an international model for urban planning and architecture. It was created as India's first planned city and was designed by Le Corbusier in 1953.
Open Hand Monument
The Open Hand Monument, located in the Capital Complex, is the symbol of Chandigarh. The hand represents the openness of the city and serves as a representation of unity and peace.
Gandhi Bhavan at Punjab University
The Gandhi Bhavan is home of the Gandhian Studies Library at Punjab University. Built by the architect Pierre Jeanneret, the building consists of three independent structures supported by a single roof.
Sukhna Lake
Sukhna Lake is a 3-kilometer-long man-made lake in the heart of Chandigarh. Because of Chandigarh's year-round warm, clear weather, Lake Sukhna is a popular spot for picnicking or swimming.
Chandigarh Rock Garden
A sort of open-air museum, the Rock Garden features artwork made from discarded metal and industrial waste. The garden was built by Nek Chand in 1957.
