Angkor Wat Tips

The beautiful structure of Angkor Wat is located in Siem Reap, Cambodia, and is one of the dozens of architectural monuments that visitors from all of the world travel to see there. Built during the 12th century to honor the Hindu god Vishnu, it represents Hindu cosmology with long narrow walkways connected by moats, which simulates the chains of mountains and the cosmic ocean. Civilizations lived here and spent years carving pictures and events all over the pinkish brown stone, giving modern-day visitors a look at how life used to be during that time.
Bike to Angkor Wat

Renting a bike to get to Angkor Wat is an ideal way to view the temple. Not only can you see all the countryside and culture while getting there, but you can visit on your own time. The roads are flat and there are plenty of signs pointing you directly to Angkor Wat, so it is difficult to get lost even though it is a lengthy bike ride (about 8 km). Bring a small backpack with a change of clothing (you will be drenched in sweat and dirt by the end of the day), bottled water and snacks.

When To Go

The ideal time to go to Angkor Wat is in the morning between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., when the heat hasn't hit the atmosphere yet. Start to go back to the hotel in the late afternoon between 5 p.m and 6 p.m., when the cooler evening air is beginning to show. These are ideal times whether you are riding a bike or not; it's just more comfortable. Keep in mind that a lot of the tours start around mid- to late morning.

Watch for Theft

Although you should be fine riding a bike on your own or in a group, make sure to be aware of your surroundings at Angkor Wat. Sometimes, locals will try to set up a scam to rob tourists. If any person who appears foreign to you approaches you and asks you to follow them to see a hidden part of the temple, refuse to follow them. It is a trap they set up to bring you by a wall, where motorcyclists will jump over, rob you then drive away. And although it is hard to believe, if you see wild monkeys around you should watch your belongings or they may sneak up on you to steal them, especially if you have food in your pack.
