South African Airlines Review

South African Airlines is the only carrier that flies direct from the USA to South Africa. It does so on a daily schedule. The airline flies out of New York's JFK airport, but as part of the Star Alliance group has convenient connections from all over the United States on partner carriers. For first and premium class fliers there are lounges that provide a needed rest before boarding and after the typical hectic process of checking in and going through security.
Wows and Woes

The service is very good. On a long haul flight such as this one can expect the flight attendants to become weary as the trip progresses, but they always seemed to be attentive, pleasant, and returned promptly with requested items. The food served was flavorful and enjoyable despite not having the first choice available, and the South African port wine for desert was delicious.

The flights have an excellent variety of movies and entertainment. However, the system continuously broke down on both the outbound and return flight making it a very long and boring fifteen hours.

Insider Tips

If you have the extra cash or miles opt for at least premium class as the seats recline to a 180-degree flat position, which is invaluable on long haul flights. In addition, book early as this route is popular for those on business or going for that ultimate safari experience, and use your Star Alliance miles to upgrade.

Author's Most Memorable Moment

I was flying from Los Angeles to Johannesburg, and when I got to New York I was already tired. Not only did the check in staff greet me with a smile, but they escorted me through security and on to the lounge. Although probably not typical, the agent took the initiative to show a weary traveler the ultimate in kindness. To complete the circle, the new arrivals terminal in Johannesburg is outstanding.

Bottom Line

The ability to fly direct to South Africa from the U.S. cannot be beat. There are fancier airlines, but for the price and convenience it is an excellent choice.
