iPod Nano
You plug your iPod into your computer and nothing happens. The iPod is configured to be an auto plug-and-play device and by default should work every time you attach your device to the computer. However, your computer doesn't recognize it---period. The culprit of this failure is likely a drive letter conflict, which a few simple mouse clicks can fix.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step 1
Let the battery on your iPod completely drain. Then plug the iPod with no battery charge to your computer. The computer should recognize the device.
Step 2
Unplug all USB devices. When multiple devices are plugged in at once, this may cause a conflict with all drive letters that are associated with the iPod to be taken up. Unplugging all devices will free up these drives. Plug only your iPod to computer.
Step 3
Change the drive letter. Plug your iPod into the computer. Right-click "My Computer" on the desktop or from the Start Menu. Select "Manage," then "Storage," and click "Disk Management." You should see your iPod. Right-click the drive of your iPod ("mass storage device") and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths." A menu will pop up; select "Change." Select a new letter for the drive (try letters that are far down in the alphabet so that there's a good chance they aren't being used, such as "T," "U" or "V").
