Facts About Mount Kenya
Mount Kenya is a famous mountain located in
Africa, known for its beauty and height. Towering above the landscape, it is home to many tribes and is the site of a National Park.
Climate
There are four seasons on Mount Kenya--two wet and two dry. These seasons are the same as those found in the lowlands of Kenya. Because of the immense height of the mountain, the climates change rapidly over different areas.
Size
Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in all of Kenya. It is the second highest in Africa, second only to Kilimanjaro. The three highest peaks of Mount Kenya reach 17,000 feet high.
Location
Mount Kenya is found south of the equator in the central part of Kenya. The surrounding area forms Mount Kenya National Park, a park dedicated to protecting and preserving Mount Kenya.
History
The mountain was once a volcano that is now extinct. The last actual eruption is estimated to have occurred almost 3.1 million years ago. The first reported sighting of Mount Kenya was in 1849 by a missionary named Johann Ludwig Krapf.
Culture
There are four main tribes living in the area around Mount Kenya today: the Gikuyu, the Meru, the Embu and the Maasai. The mountain is a big part of their culture and is considered sacred.
