Cape Town is the capital of South
Africa. Its estimated population of more than 3.5 million people makes it the second most populated city in South Africa. The city is known for its harbor and landmarks, including Table Mountain and Cape Point.
History
Cape Town was founded in 1652, but inhabitants could date back more than 15,000 years. Cape Town was ruled by both the Dutch and English before joining the Republic of South Africa.
Geography
Cape Town in on the northern end of Cape Peninsula just off the Atlantic Ocean.
Considerations
Cape Town's climate is mild with the average minimum temperature 45 degrees in the winter and an average maximum temperature of 79 degrees in summer.
Function
Cape Town is governed by a City Council made-up of more than 200 members. The City Council chooses an executive mayor and executive deputy mayor.
Famous Ties
In 1990, Nelson Mandela made his first public speech after serving 27 years in prison for anti-apartheid activism.
