If you find yourself with a car when you visit Colorado in the wintertime, there are a number of Colorado ski resorts worth checking out. Aspen is one of these and is worth a visit on any Colorado ski vacation. On the way to Aspen from Denver, you will find many wonderful stopping points also worth a detour.
One of the closest ski resorts to Denver is Winter Park. The vast mountain here welcomes all levels of skiers. Mary Jane is famous for its high level of difficulty and long mogul runs. A small mountain is open for those wishing to spend the day sledding with the assistance of a small ski lift to take them up the hill. Berthoud Pass, leading in to Winter Park, is a great place to make some backcountry turns.
On the Way to Aspen
Another ski resort on the way toward Aspen is Copper Mountain. This is a local favorite among Coloradoans. Its long faces invite skiers and snowboarders to ski runs that leave them breathless, exhilarated and deservingly tired. The mountain is smaller than some others in Colorado, but the terrain is diverse and Copper lies just off the Interstate, making it a convenient stop for travelers.
The last big resort one will encounter on a trip toward Aspen in the winter is Vail. Vail is a world-renowned ski resort that is modeled after resorts in the Alps. The doors of chateaus and wooden shutters open up to a mountain with endless terrain. Vail has been developing its ski-able terrain for years, making it a mountain whose nooks and crannies could take weeks to fully explore. While it is fun to stay at one of these resorts, another good option is to stay in a condo in Aspen, in order to take advantage of all four mountains, rather than just one.
