Named for the sound made by the hoary marmots that live in the rocks, Whistler Canada is a very popular ski destination. The area has been so well protected from development that much of what you will see is just as it was when it was first mapped in 1877. Getting a vacation rental or a hotel isn't really a problem, there are plenty of places to stay, so it might be nice to have some background on this snow covered bit of Canadian glory.
Just Whistler, I'll Be There
Up until around 1910 Whistler Canada was primarily a destination for trappers and other outdoor adventurers. The abundant supply of fish and other wildlife meant that with some effort a person could make a pretty decent living. In 1910 though, the arrival of Myrtle Philip brought a new industry to town, that industry being tourism.
It is a testament to the beauty of the area and the amazing ski conditions that Myrtle and her husband heard about the town while they were in Maine and were so impressed that they took the long journey to see for themselves. In 1914 they decided to buy a piece of land and start a ski lodge. Certainly the potential for this being a destination for people around the globe was present, but there is also the question of timing, and luckily 1914 was also the time when the railroad arrived, making access to the area a lot easier and a lot faster.
Today access to the area is a lot easier, but the developers have wisely limited excessive roads, because of course the thing everyone loves about Whistler Canada is that the land remains very much unspoiled. The ski conditions are fantastic, which is probably why Whistler is on the short list of candidates for the 2010 Olympics.
