Nothing captures the essence of childhood like the image of a helium balloon. Whether tied by string to the wrist of a child tugging upwards toward the sky, or floating alone high above the clouds, balloons are symbols of innocence; emblems of youth. They evoke feelings of nostalgia, celebration, and festivity to which people of all ages can relate.
Despite the fact that I am nearly thirty years of age, nothing attracts my immediate attention like the sight of an individual carrying a fistful of helium balloons. As I did when I was a child, I can't help but wonder just how many of those balloons I would have to hold in order to float away. And if, in fact, I was able to float away under the canopy of beautiful balloons, how far could I go? How high would I soar?
Hot Air Balloons: Deliciously Absurd
Perhaps I am not alone. Perhaps similar fascinations are what make hot air balloons so exciting. While airplanes and helicopters are certainly interesting, hot air balloons are positively mesmerizing. There is something preposterously delicious about a giant helium balloon so large that it's actually capable of lifting someone off the ground.
Why else would hot air balloons be so popular? They aren't exactly efficient mediums of transport: they don't travel at fast rates of speed and they can only carry a handful or so of people. As a matter of fact, when it comes to air travel, airplanes and helicopters have the efficiency market covered. But hot air balloons offer one thing that other aviation crafts do not: the opportunity to fly with the wind in your face.
Flying in a hot air balloon is a truly surreal experience. With nothing but a wicker basket and a giant inflatable dome supporting your weight, you soar above mountaintops and skyscrapers. Without any windows or doors restricting your movements, you can literally reach out and touch the clouds. Without the roar of an engine deafening the ears, you can experience the sound of the wind in the same way the angels do.
Hot Air Balloon Fancy
It is the quest for such fanciful aeronautics that has created a subculture of individuals whose shared passion is hot air balloons. From pilots to designers, there are literally thousands of people whose livelihoods revolve around hot air balloon flight. This subculture is believed to have been conceived during the 1960s, when the design for the modern hot air balloon was finally perfected and flights became more and more routine.
Whether the interest is professional or dilettante, hot air balloons seem to draw universal appreciation. From children who wonder what it would be like to fly behind a string, to adults who refused to surrender the dream in the hopes of realizing it, hot air balloon enthusiasts span both time and distance.
