Hiking in Grand Canyon National Park can be an exhilarating experience. It can also be extremely dangerous if you aren't careful. Dozens of lives have been lost within the walls of the Grand Canyon by visitors and novice hikers who have underestimated its hazards. That is why all G.C. visitors (novice and experienced alike) who plan on hiking the Canyon are advised to take every precaution.
Grand Canyon Hiking Tips
The best time to hike the Grand Canyon is during the months of October through April. This is due to the fact that temperatures during these months tend to be much cooler. Heat related injuries and deaths rank among the most common in the park. Hikers who don't know any better often find themselves overwhelmed by the drastic rise in temperature as they descend into the canyon. The cooler the season, the less risk you will have of getting hurt this way.
When planning your hiking trip in Grand Canyon National Park, it is strongly advised that you consult with a reputable guide in the area. Despite its popularity among tourists and vacationers, the Grand Canyon is a massive crevasse in which it is surprisingly easy to get lost. If you insist on going alone, make sure to pack plenty of water, several maps of the area and a compass.
Although novice hikers are advised against it, it is possible to hike in Grand Canyon's back country. Please be advised, however, that a permit is required for individuals who wish to camp there. The cost of a permit is $10.00 and is issued from the Grand Canyon National Park Backcountry Office. Make sure you submit your request as early as possible because they tend to sell out quickly.
