Alaska Northern Lights

One of the great things about the Alaska Northern Lights is that no two aurorae ever look exactly alike. You can stare at the Aurora Borealis every night and have a different experience every time. The wonder of the Alaska Northern Lights never diminishes, making them one of the most popular and awe-inspiring natural phenomena available to us on this planet.

Many people have heard about the Alaska Northern Lights, and have seen pictures and read explanations in their science textbooks, but the actual experience is one that can never be communicated. It must be felt. The waving, moving, immense shower of color is completely unique, and brings even the most hardened travelers and explorers and intense feeling of awe.

Seeing the Alaska Northern LightsCertain months are much better for seeing the Alaska Northern Lights than others. Typically the best time to see the Aurora Borealis is in late summer, from August to September. The aurorae are stronger then, and there is enough darkness at night to see the lights. The same is not true during early summer. In June, the time of the midnight sun, it never really gets dark.

Nature tours in the Yukon area and other areas of Alaska and Canada offer a good chance to see the lights, as well as to enjoy the spectacular wilderness. The Yukon is home to some of the largest wildlife preserves in the world, and campers sitting around the fire in late August often look up and find the world's largest light show dancing above them. It is an experience few forget.
