For the most part, your travel agent career is what you decide to make it. If you decide to work for a small travel agency, you will probably be working very hard to make a decent wage, simply because business is tough. If you become one of the many independent travel agents working today, you may be able to make some money, if you know what to do.
If you're just about to embark on your travel agent career, may I humbly suggest you try a company like Global Travel International? The great thing about them is that you do build up clients that you can then take to a smaller agency if you decide to. However, if you're like most people who try such a service, you will probably never leave because you'll enjoy yourself so much!
Make Sure It's Your Travel Agent Career
Many people decide to become a travel agent because they think they will have a lot of freedom and that the perks of the job will be too much fun. While this is true for a few travel agents, the climb to the top to really be able to enjoy your freedom is long and sometimes painful. Make sure you're establishing your travel agent career and that someone else isn't forcing you into a style that isn't "you."
When a close friend of mine left the travel industry years ago, I didn't understand why. Once I had been working as a travel agent for a few months, she confided in me that she never had any fun. She watched me work and grew to understand that if she had known about what I was doing now, she'd would have done it in a second. Instead, she spent her travel agent career working for someone else and never really becoming anything more than an assistant.
