There are some ambitious people who want to have a travel agency business to make a lot of money. Usually, those who want to start a travel agency are young and haven't had too many long work days in their lives. A travel agency as a business is a lot of work, which, forgive the assumption, not many people actually want to do.
I will tell people, albeit rarely, that I have a travel agency. The reality is that I don't own an agency, it's just easier to explain how I work by saying I do. In a sense I am an affiliate for an online travel agency that pays me for the business I sell as a travel agent. I don't have to work 70-hour weeks and I don't have to lose sleep over my job anymore so I'm happy to call it my business.
Travel Agency Business 101--What Do You Want?
The main thing I would say to people who want to learn about travel agency business 101 is that you need to think about what you want. Do you want to deal with leasing an office and equipment and building enough of a clientele that you are able to make rent each month? Would you rather not have too many expenses, say less than $500 a year, and make as much money as you'd like to try to make with as little or as much effort as you'd like to put in?
I thought most people would like the latter. The latter is not what you do in the travel agency business. The latter is what you do by doing what I did and booking travel, getting discounts and getting paid for the effort. Some days I work, some days I don't. As a home based travel agent, I control my cash flow and I control my sanity--not something I could do if I owned a travel agency as a business.
