Timeshares are a great investment, providing you with not only a good financial choice but also a great vacation venue. The timeshare world can seem complicated, commingling real estate investment with the desire for great vacation spots you can count on, year after year. As such, there's a lot to discuss, from dollars and cents to actual quality of life.
On the one hand, timeshares are all about investment in a place: preferably a beautiful place, in a wonderful (possibly even exotic) location. In other words, we're talking about a place you could never afford by yourself.
However, if you were to invest in the place with several other people (or groups of people), you'd all be timesharing. That is, you'd all be engaging in timeshare purchases: each investing in the same property, with the understanding that you'll share it by divvying up the time.
Timeshares 101
Basically, timeshares work like this: a bunch of people are interested in a vacation property (a resort, a cabin, a house, a condo). Each puts in a fair percentage of the purchase price, with extra funds laid out for annual maintenance. This is the bulk of your cash outlay.
Then all of you divvy up the time that each is allowed to spend at this timeshare vacation wonderland. For a designated week, or month, or weekend each year, the place is yours. The next week, it's somebody else's turn.
In that way, you are guaranteed a great vacation spot, on a predictable week you can plan for, every year. This is what timeshares are all about. This is why so many people are drawn to timeshares, for both sale and rent.
Are Timeshares for You?
There are many things to consider when investigating a timeshare investment. There are rules regarding how business is conducted (timeshare sales, timeshare resales, timeshare rentals, and the like). There are also timeshare companies which work in a different manner than individual timeshares.
I'll also talk about the best ways to suss out worthwhile timeshares: for example, timeshare message boards (one of the best sources of timeshare information, where the community of people who are actively involved in timeshares compare notes, go to grumble or praise, etc.). By the end of these pages, I hope you'll know enough to decide for yourself whether timeshares are right for you.
