There are oodles of great places to stay in San Antonio, but you should be more interested in all of the places to see in San Antonio. A metropolis with over a million inhabitants, San Antonio has no shortage of hotels near all of its world-famous historical attractions. In fact, "historical attractions" pretty much defines a vacation to San Antonio--it's a culture buff's wildest dream.
There are certain areas of San Antonio that have more affordable place to lodge--the historic districts tend to have higher rates on hotels that discourage some travelers. However, it's important to have your hotel somewhere near the attractions you'd like to visit--no one wants to sit through a lot of big-city traffic on their vacation. The preferred places to find great affordable lodging are the Northwest Side and Downtown.
Try Downtown Lodging When Visiting the Alamo
By far, visiting the site of the Battle of the Alamo is the most popular attraction is San Antonio, and it's right in the heart of downtown. Downtown is a home for many middle-class Texans, and has many hotels that offer great savings, without skimping on quality. While downtown, you might want to visit the Fairmont Hotel, which was moved, completely intact, in 1985.
On the Northwest Side, you'll also find great lodging that's cleanly and cost-effective, but you won't be as near the attractions. In fact, the Northwest Side is mostly residential housing, with few big tourist attractions. It is a great lodging spot for travelers--there are several exciting suburbs and historic districts only a short ride away.
