History Abounds
Jefferson, Texas has played a very important role in the early development of the state. It is the center of culture and southern refinement, of wagon trains, and ox-team freighters. The town was once the pride of a great cotton empire surrounded by graceful living, charm, prestige, and productivity. Situated on Big Cypress Bayou, Jefferson, Texas early on became known as a river port town, and, in fact, has been described as the "River port to the Southwest."

A unique blend of history, Jefferson, Texas once resembled Louisiana and Missouri more than it did its own Texas neighbors to the West. Instead of cowboys and ranchers there were river boat captains, dockhands and lumbermen. Marion County only became part of the United States territories because of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and the town of Jefferson received a great influx of the early immigration movement because of the "Great Raft" routed waterway into the Cypress Bayou, which allowed the steamboats to reach Jefferson. After the Civil War ended, Jefferson experienced its heyday with people coming in from the devastated southern states seeking a new life.
