College Ski Week

College ski week is a tradition that many schools take more seriously than spring break. For schools that are close to ski resorts, like those in the New England area or in Colorado, college ski week is a time where parties are free flowing and skiing is good to go. I had not been privy to the college ski week experience until I lived for a while in New Hampshire. Now, I have been indoctrinated into the ski fraternity by experiencing all the different winter festivals and activities, including ski week.

The History of College Ski Week
Though each school has a different week set aside for skiing and winter festivities and parties, the idea is basically the same. Sometime during the winter, a bunch of college students will set out on a week long holiday that will include a lots of skiing during the day and parties at night. There is no real understanding of where the idea began, but my guess is somewhere in the marketing boardroom of a ski resort. However, its possible commercial origins do not take away from its success as a party starter.

Some colleges celebrate college ski week over the Christmas vacation, which works out for many because it allows for students from different universities to meet up at different locations for one big party instead of many small parties at different times of the year. This definitely appealed to me when I was in college! I can remember a mountain being occupied strictly with students, with no older skiers blocking the good jumps on the hill.

What was more important was that all of the beautiful people in the lodge. College is a time for good times and fun, and many find time for a little romance as well during ski week. Choosing a good location and booking early are key to securing the best (and most affordable) lodging, so working ahead of time with a travel agency can be a good way to go.
