One of the most famous and prolific of all the Russian opera theaters is the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. The first performing company, known as the Mariinsky Theater Company, was established in the late 1700s, after Empress Catherine issued an edict to develop more opera in Russia. The theater itself was finished in 1860, and Mikhail Glinka's opera A Life for the Tsar was the first production performed there.
Wagner came to St. Petersburg and conducted several of his operas at the theatre. Several Russian composers were flourishing at that time as well, including Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev. Tchaikowsky himself conducted his opera Eugene Onegin at that theater.
Other famous Russian opera theaters include the Bolshoi in Moscow. Distinctly Russian operas include Prokofiev's The Fiery Angel and War and Peace, inspired by Tolstoy's novel of the same name. Many great operas were produced during the Soviet years, as well.
