Peterhof Palace, also known as the Versailles of Russia, is so much more than just a palace. Originally built as the summer palace of Peter the Great, the property was built upon and improved by many of his Imperial descendants. The grounds are home to the stunning Grand Palace and the Grand Cascade, an ensemble of almost two hundred fountains that cascade down toward the Baltic Sea.
Peterhof Palace is approximately 40 km. from St. Petersburg, and is accessible by bus, car, or boat. Fast hydrofoil boats are probably the most comfortable and scenic means of reaching Peterhof, and the trip takes a little less than an hour. Most people spend hours strolling the expansive grounds and museum. It is a very romantic place, with great views of the Baltic Sea.
Besides the Grand Palace, there is a smaller summer cottage on the grounds that has been painstakingly preserved as it was in the time of the Tsars. The Grand Palace is full of 18th and 19th century art, furnishings, and artifacts. The grounds are spotted with gilt statues of ancient gods and heroes.
