Novgorod, Russia

Novgorod, Russia is the oldest city in the country and dates back to 862, when Rurick, the first prince of Russia, was in power. In 1862, Tsar Alexander II had a monument built in the city to memorialize 1,000 years of Russian rule. Structures are still standing in the city that were built over a thousand years ago.

Not to be confused with the larger city of Niznhy Novgorod (formerly known as Gorky), Novgorod, Russia is between St. Petersburg and Moscow and is full of authentic Russian charm and history. St. Sophia's Cathedral, the Novgorod Kremlin, and many other churches and buildings are incredible examples of early Russian architecture. Unlike St. Petersburg, which has a large international and European influence, Novgorod is distinctly Russian.

The history of the city and its time span is amazing. Back in the time of Genghis Khan and the Tartars, Novgorod was the only Russian city to survive a brutal attack. The city has since withstood revolutions, wars, the Cold War, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Only time will tell if Novgorod will survive the next 1,000 years.
