Durango Silverton Railroad

When you climb aboard Colorado's Durango Silverton Railroad, it's kind of like entering the old west. The train really is vintage, built originally in the 1880s. The train itself is a star, having been featured in old west movies like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and How the West Was Won, as well as many others. But the Durango Silverton Railroad is no prop or imitation. It's the real thing..

When to Take the Durango Silverton Railroad
The summer and winter seasons offer different types of trips on the Durango Silverton Railroad. In the summer, you can choose to ride the gondola cars, which feature open sides. Though you'll want to bring a jacket along, it's great to feel the fresh cool air as you ride. The summer trips are very popular, so you need to make reservations.

The winter trips offer only the parlor and coach cars which are covered and heated, and you'll be treated to hot cider, cocoa and cookies. You'll get to see the same land but beautifully snow covered. If you'd prefer the larger and more elegant parlor car, you'll have to reserve it long in advance. Parlor cars also offer extras like champagne.

When choosing which Durango Silverton Railroad trip to make, consider the length of the trip and any special events. There are two to four day trips, the latter featuring rafting and/or jeep tours! Check the calendar of special events for musical performances and other events. New Year's Eve even has a Victorian dress up event on the train!
