Travel Arequipa Peru

If you are planning to travel Arequipa Peru, you are in for a treat. Arequipa, the "White City of Peru," is located in the desert mountains of the Andes, at an altitude of 2325 miles above sea level. The city gains its name due to the plentiful white volcanic stone (called sillar), which has been used to construct almost every building.

To travel Arequipa Peru, the second biggest city in the country, you must take in the views of the volcano El Misti, luckily sleeping and covered with snow, which takes up the large view of the landscape. You can also see the volcanos Chachani and Pichu-Pichu in the distance to the east and take advantage of capturing some great Peru pictures. Or, if you wish to go down to sea level, the coast is only a short 2 hour trip to the west.

After an earthquake destroyed most of the city, it was rebuilt in 1540, and since then has seen a rebirth in beautiful buildings, including those found in Arequipa's Plaza de Armas. A gorgeous twin-towered Cathedral built in 1612 features beautifully carved wooden decorations and a Belgian organ. Nearby the Cathedral, along the streets of the Plaza, are located many Peruvian restaurants, shops, and cafes.

The Monasterio de Santa Catalina, a convent built in the late 1500's, was finally opened to the public after 400 years of use as a cloister. It is built like a small colonial town, walled to create sanctity and quiet, and include gardens, patios, and fountains to visit.
