The Floating Islands of Lake Titikaka are among the most impressive islands on the planet. This is because they are not literally islands, but they do litterally float. Each island is made of totora reeds woven together in chunks so large that some of the islands measure almost half the size of a football field!
They were constructed by the Uros people who initially created the islands to help isolate themselves on the lake from the more aggressive Inca and Collas peoples. The Uros, for the most part, still live the way they did hundreds of years ago. However, they have adapted to the twenty-first century tourists.
The Floating Islands - Like Floating Back In Time!
While they have adapted somewhat to modern times, the only real change is that they cater to the tourists who visit their islands by selling various hand-made woven goods. Aside from that, they still live off of those totora reeds - quite literally! They weave various items from the versatile reeds, including the very "ground" they walk on!
While there are many natural reasons to visit Lake Titikaka, the Uros people and their Floating Islands are a great man-made reason to visit. You will not believe that you are not standing on solid ground when you climb out of your reed-boat. The Floating Islands are easily going to make for your most unique of all of your Peru tourist attractions!
