A visa allows a person to remain in the country legally. Visas are either granted to people who want to live in the United States or people who want to be in the United States for a period of time for a specific purpose. Visa application forms are an important component of the visa application process.
The Facts
The U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS), a branch of the Department of Homeland Security, is responsible for American visas. If you are traveling in the United States for less than 90 days and are a citizen of a country participating in the Visa Waiver program (see Resources below), you do not need a visa. Otherwise, you will need apply for and obtain a visa to be in the United States legally.
Types
You can either complete the American visa application forms on paper or online. To download the forms, go to the U.S. State Department Visa Application Form website (see Resources below) and select the correct form. Download, print and complete the form. To complete the forms online, go to the U.S. State Department Electronic Visa Application website and verify that your computer meets the system requirements. Enter all information in English and verify that the information is correct. At the end of the form, press the "Continue" button. If you do not press the "Continue" button, the application will not be correctly formatted.
Significance
Time Frame
The visa application process can take several weeks. If additional reviews are necessary, the process can take an additional 4 to 6 weeks. Be sure to allow adequate time for the application process.
Benefits
If you submit the forms online, the application process time can be reduced. The forms will be sent to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate before your appointment. The barcode on the printed forms provides an identification number for you. Be sure to bring the printed pages to the interview with you and make sure that you do not fold the papers.
