Sure, walking in Paris is great, but if you really want to get somewhere fast, take the metro. The metro is an experience in itself, another one of Paris' many sights. So even though you can see Paris on foot--roughly only 6 miles across--you might want to take the Metro even if you have nowhere to get quickly.
Modern as it seems, the Metro was built all the way back in 1900. One of the main features of the Metro are the Art-Nouveau entrances. If you're looking for a metro stop, the entrances are hard to miss. They tower over the sidewalk almost like a living thing.
Metro Tickets
One of the main travel tips about the Paris Metro is to keep your ticket for your entire ride. The metro doesn't use tokens like the New York City subway. Instead you purchase a ticket. If you are asked to furnish your ticket and you misplaced it or worse, you were using an outdated ticket, you will be fined 200 francs (roughly 30 dollars). Your best bet may be to get a Paris Visites ticket which is good for unlimited use for 1, 2, 3, or 5 days.
The best thing about the Paris metro is that it is easy. It connects the entire city so you will most likely not have to walk very far when you get where you are going on your Paris vacation. The maps in the station are easy to read and don't require that you can read French.
