The people buried at the Pantheon read like a who's who of French intellectual life: Victor Hugo, Voltaire, Diderot, Rousseau, Emile Zola, to name a few. That the Pantheon is even a mausoleum is part of its history. Louis XV commissioned it as a church but during the French revolution it was converted into a shrine for national heroes and intellectuals.
Seeing The Pantheon from Your Lodging in Paris
It may seem sort of morbid to want to see a giant tomb from the window of you lodging in Paris, but the Pantheon is hard to miss. Resembling the United States Capital Building as it was also designed in the Greek Style, it towers over the skyline.
Inside, the Pantheon is suitably gloomy. Cold, breezy, even in the heat of summer, they did a good job converting this church into a tomb--even boarding up some of the stained glass windows. Not to paint too dark a picture, because while it is a memorial to the dead, the Pantheon is also a tribute to France's rich intellectual life.
