What does Central Paris mean? For those who are brand new to Paris, here's a primer on how the city is laid out. First--and you're going to become very familiar with this word--Paris is broken up into twenty arrondissements. Each arrondissement is a neighborhood.
The arrondissements start in Central Paris on the right bank and then spiral outward so the twentieth arrondissement is on the outskirts of Paris. The spiraling nature of arrondissements can sometimes be confusing--for example, the seventh arrondissement is on the right bank whereas the ninth is on the right bank. Keeping a map with you is a good idea.
Walking Through Central Paris And Beyond
One of the very best activities in Paris is an old-fashioned walk. This is not a cheapskate's way out, it is actually a great way to see the city. Paris is actually quite small. Sometimes it seems more like a big village than a city.
It is possible to walk from the top of Paris--the 18th arrondissement-to the bottom--the 14th--in a day. Along the way you may pass the Marais, Notre Dame, and of course the Seine which divides the city into two halves. As you walk you'll get a good sense of the different neighborhoods and how the city unfolds.
